& bus to the summit of Mt. Vesuvius

Train travel to Pompeii is quick and simple, so let's get straight to it.

The name of the train station you want is Pompeii Scavi-Villa dei Misteri

The main entrance to the Pompeii historical site is only metres from the Pompeii Scavi-Villa dei Misteri train station. It's a short 2-minute walk (approx 100m) from the train station to the Pompeii entrance, where you can purchase an entry ticket or join small group tours of Pompeii. No bookings are required in advance unless you want a private tour.

HOW CLOSE?

Pompeii Scavi-Villa dei Misteri train station is on the Circumvesuviana line between Naples and Sorrento.

You have two options for trains.

  1. The Circumvesuviana Train is a commuter train often used by locals and will have more stops on the route.

  2. The Campania Express runs on the same line but stops less frequently near major attractions (like Pompeii and Herculaneum) but runs less frequently.

Both trains stop at the Pompeii Scavi-Villa dei Misteri train station for easy access to the Pompeii site.

From Sorrento ..... 45 minutes

Want to catch the bus up to Mt Vesuvius?

Things to consider if you are contemplating combining your visit to the Pompeii historical site with a trip to Mt Vesuvius summit.

The bus trip from Pompeii train station to Mt Vesuvius can take over an hour, depending on traffic.

It is approximately another 3km from the bus drop-off point to the creator edge of the volcano. This is approximately a 45-minute walk on a steep, loose rock surface. Adequate footwear is highly recommended.

The view from the summit over the Bay of Naples is stunning, although be aware that if cloud cover comes in, visibility is absolute zero. The entire summit will be covered in mist, so it's highly recommended that you check the cloud cover and wind before you head up to the volcano crater's edge.
