Travel enriches our lives and stimulates our minds and body. There is although sometimes peer pressure to follow a particular routine to visit landmark attractions and do as others have done. Holding up the Leaning Tower of Pisa might give you a sense of what I'm talking about.
Travel should be all about the individual. Of course, there are landmark attractions that are wonderful to visit but don't let the fame and its listing on the 7 wonders of the ancient world cause you to think you MUST go there.
Consider what you like in life, what makes you happy? If you're an avid golfer, then maybe you'd give visiting Edinburgh Castle and miss and drive an extra 2 hours and visit the world-famous St Andrews Link golf course?
Not everybody is an art gallery fan, but sometimes people feel like they must visit the Louvre when in Paris. There's a sense that you'll miss out on something or your friends will say "You were in Paris and you didn't visit the famous Louvre?" Maybe as a foodie, you'd prefer to do a French cooking class or wine appreciation course instead?. Fact is, why wait in line to see something you are not really interested in, just to say "I've been there".
As a diehard football fan and Manchester United supporter, I chose to travel the 3 hours with my son from London to Manchester to do a stadium tour of the Theatre of Dreams, Old Trafford. I'm sorry, but Buckingham Palace just doesn't do it for me, but I fully appreciate many people would love a tour of Buckingham Palace over a football stadium. That's why it's important to tailor your travel itinerary to your own interests.
Sometimes it's the small 'out of the way' villages that offer more authentic experiences, so don't just look on the major tour and attraction travel sites, take a look at the local region and search directly. Keep an open mind and think outside the box. Our destinations are filled with magical experiences. Just make them your experiences, not somebody else's bucket list.
